The Greater Gift Initiative has been so busy donating vaccines and advocating for clinical trial participants that we haven't blogged in a while! Now in our second year, GGI has donated over 27,000 vaccines to date! These donations have been made to honor and thank clinical trial participants for their critical role in the development of new medicines and also in honor of many researchers and clinical trial professionals that work every day to advance medicine in the US and around the globe. We are very excited to continue to grow in 2014 and stack the impact through new partnerships with clinical trial sites, CROs, and pharma.
As I read the news in the vaccine world, I am excited to learn of global health milestones being celebrated in 2014. In January, India marked three years since its last case of wild polio, a landmark achievement for global public health and the worldwide effort to eradicate polio. According to Rotary International, there are only three countries that remain as polio-endemic, Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. The End Polio Now Campaign of Rotary International is hard at work to obtain the needed funding to eliminate polio in this countries and maintain immunization rates of children in polio at-risk countries. Until polio is eradicated everywhere, no unvaccinated child is safe anywhere. If polio rebounds, more than 200,000 children worldwide could be paralyzed each year within a decade. You can participate in this effort alongside End Polio Now! For as little as 60 cents, a child can be vaccinated against polio for life, and from 2013 to 2018, every US dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication will become three dollars, thanks to a 2-to-1 match from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. I encourage you to visit the End Polio Now website at www.endpolio.org to learn more about the We are “This Close” campaign to ending polio. Watch the World’s Biggest Commercial, featuring celebrities and world leaders showing their support to end polio by making the “This Close” sign. You can join the commercial too!
